Saint Agapitus
One of the glories of the Latin Church to which we belong, has always been the memory of the early Catholics who blazed the trail of fidelity to Christ for all of us. From my early chldhood I can well recall the stories of Saint Tarcisius, of Saint Helena, Saint Agnes and so many others . Many died in the Roman persecutions.
A recent official attempt to throttle the Traditional Latin Mass has had the opposite effect to what its author intended. Shining a spotlight on the treasure which is the traditional Liturgy, has only served to intensify devotion to it and all that surrounds it. The secular efforts to compel a new "world order" have only served to alarm people generally and to put them on guard against all such intentions.
To-day in the Calendar of the Traditional Liturgy, is the Feast of Saint Agapitus. I have to admit that I cannot recall having heard of him before. Nevertheless in this new era of stimulated traditional interest, I felt compelled to find out about him.I was surprised to learn how much he had in common with current devotion.
Agapitus Anicia was a 16yrs old youth who lived in the Roman city of Praeneste (Palestrina) in Italy. He was martyred on this day in the year A.D. 275 by beheading, for refusing to renounce his Catholic Faith.According to the story of his young life he had earlier been thrown to the lions , but they did not attack him. In order to effect his martyrdom, the Roman authorities - Prefect Antiochus under the Emperor Aurelian -then decided upon his beheading.
The heroism of this noble youth and his choice of death before any betrayal of Christ, brings to mind the very modern devotion to Blessed Carlo Acutis. He too was very young and brave in his dedication to Christ, though not a martyr, he died of cancer.His life was truly exemplary as he used his considerable computer skills to foster devotion to Eucharistic miracles. The two young men are now united with Christ for Eternity.
There is much that the Church has always gained from preserving the memory of these early heroes of the Faith such as Agapitus. The purity of their dedication , against every hostile circumstance is truly noble, inspiring and attractive. One has to wonder what could motivate anyone trying to break that link to our origins. If it is not malice of some sort, it is at best shameful ignorance and insensitivity to the natural inclinations of the faithful.
